URPN 325-501 Intro to GIS

at TAMU in the Fall 2018, Spring/Fall 2019, and Spring/Fall 2020

This course is an introductory level course in Geographic Information System (GIS). Students will develop a clear understanding of fundamental concepts, principles and functions of GIS. Topics include cartography, coordinate systems, data acquisition, data accuracy, database development, and spatial analysis. Through regularly scheduled readings and exercises, students will build proficiency in the use of GIS software and related hardware. A student’s research project enables to apply learned GIS methods through the semester; developing research topic, finding data, applying & analyzing with GIS, and interpreting the result. Case studies of GIS applications particular to fields of instruction within the College of Architecture will be emphasized. In addition, class discussions and exercises will also use examples of applications pertinent to many other disciplines, befitting the ubiquitous nature of GIS to those many disciplines.
